Meh. The Haruhi fandom is targeted at guys. While girl fans are present and going strong a lot of the fans(and therefore, fanartists) are still male. A pretty and ambiguously gay guy threatens their masculinity I guess.

It's amusing how so many guys all like "omg Koizumi's not fully gay! Just bi or something!" and then with Itsuko "make her a lesbian! A hot raging lesbian!".

I think you're assuming too much, it doesn't seem to me that the male fans hate Itsuki, it's just that a character like him is only bound to be not-so-popular with the males, he's a gayish character in a male-oriented series after all.

And Itsuko, well, with the genderswapping the males' attention is divided only between Kyonko and Itsuko [leaving minor characters aside].

Also, Itsuko's lesbianism is done merely for comedy's sake for the most part, just like Itsuki's gayism.

In short, no one hates Itsuki, he's just not popular. Itsuko IS more popular, but only because she's the only other major character that can get this kind of attention from the males.
